âAdviceâ
What can you and your spouse do to control those nutritional and substance habits that affect your behavior and consequently affect the way you communicate with each other? Our experience and research would suggest that we are able summarize the major issues with the advice tips listed below. While the list is by no means all-inclusive, it can start you on the right path to feeling healthy both physically and psychologically. It is offered in the hope that you and your spouse will become more cognizant of factors that affect your communication on a psychological level. Successful couples care about what they eat because they understand the importance of managing the health of their bodies as well as their minds.
They also care about the way they look for each other. When you smile and look nice you are sending beautiful messages to your spouse that increase the chances for the characteristic of Your Body Is Your Castle to happen and become a habit in your marriage. Taking the extra time to put your best foot forward whenever your lover is around is definitely worth the effort it takes.
Try a few of the ideas we learned from research and some of the happily married couples we interviewed to help you on your way to eating right, smiling, and looking nice for your spouse. This advice can make the characteristic of Your Body Is Your Castle become a natural part of your relationship, just like it is for successfully married couples.
1. Read a good book or google some of the excellent websites about nutrition and vitamins. In the health or psychology section of your bookstore the shelves are filled with excellent books on the subject of how different foods affect your psychological health as well as your physical health. A good website to start your nutrition education is www.MyPyramid.gov provided by the USDA. This website provides basic information about the food groups, what each does for the body, and recommendations for proper nutrition. The more you understand about the effects of different food and drink, the better chance you have of changing your habits. Remember, successful couples pay particular attention to their nutrition because of the effects on overall mental and physical wellness.
2. Eat lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains that are rich in nutrients while cutting way down on foods containing salt, refined sugar, white flour, food preservatives, coloring agents, artificial flavoring, hydrogenated fat, alcohol, and nicotine. In the Appendix (p. 288) we provide some of our favorite fresh salad recipes for you to try over the next two weeks. We are able to add fresh vegetables to our diet with the salads we make and eat each evening with our dinner. Try some of these recipes with your dinners. They are really quite easy and a delightful way to add fresh vegetables to your daily meals.
Did you know that canned vegetables have a 239,000% increase in sodium over fresh vegetables according to one researcher? (That was not a typographical error; it really was an astounding 239,000%!) Read the labels on the food you buy.
